Is this virus warning on my computer real?

A browser pop-up that locks the screen, sounds an alarm, or tells you to call support is commonly a tech-support scam.

Example message
“Security alert: Your computer is infected and your banking information is at risk. Do not turn off the device. Call Microsoft support now.”

Why this is suspicious

Web pages can imitate operating-system warnings. The number connects to someone who may request remote access, payment, or access to your financial accounts.

Warning signs

  • The warning appears inside a browser
  • It plays a siren or prevents easy closing
  • It displays a phone number
  • The caller asks to control your screen

What to do next

  1. Do not call or click inside the warning
  2. Close the browser tab or window without interacting with the warning
  3. Ask someone you know and trust for help if you are unsure
  4. If you granted access or shared information, follow the FTC's recovery guidance and change any exposed passwords
