Why did someone send me a check for too much money?
A buyer or employer who sends an oversized check and asks you to return part of it is using a fake check scam.
“I accidentally wrote the check for $2,500 instead of $500. Deposit it and send the extra $2,000 back today.”
Why this is suspicious
Banks may make deposited funds appear available before discovering that a check is counterfeit. When it bounces, you must repay the bank while the money you sent is gone.
Warning signs
- The check is for more than expected
- You are asked to send part of the money elsewhere
- They say the bank cleared it, so it must be safe
- They request gift cards, a wire, or a payment app
What to do next
- Do not deposit the check or send money
- If deposited, contact your bank's fraud department
- Keep the check and messages as evidence
- Report the account or listing where you met the sender
