Did I really win a prize or sweepstakes?
A prize that requires taxes, processing fees, or gift-card payments before delivery is not a real prize.
“Congratulations, you won $2.5 million. Pay the $950 processing and tax fee today so we can release your winnings.”
Why this is suspicious
Legitimate sweepstakes do not make winners pay to receive a prize. A check sent to cover fees may also be counterfeit.
Warning signs
- You do not remember entering
- Payment is required before receiving anything
- They claim the offer is confidential
- They send a check and ask you to return part of it
What to do next
- Do not pay or deposit a check
- Do not share bank or identity information
- Search the organization independently
- Report the notice to the FTC and postal inspectors if it arrived by mail
