Is this apartment or vacation rental listing fake?
Scammers copy real listings, offer unusually low rent, and demand a deposit before you can see the property.
“I am overseas and cannot show the apartment. Send the deposit by wire today and I will mail the keys.”
Why this is suspicious
The person may not own the property at all. Stolen photos and descriptions can make a fake listing appear completely real.
Warning signs
- The price is far below nearby rentals
- You cannot tour the property
- The owner is always out of town
- Payment must be wired, sent in crypto, or paid by gift card
What to do next
- Search the address and listing photos online
- Confirm the owner or management company independently
- Tour the property or ask someone trusted to do so
- Do not send a deposit through an irreversible payment method
