Is this unpaid toll text a scam?

Texts threatening fees or vehicle penalties over a small unpaid toll commonly lead to phishing sites.

Example message
“Final notice: You have an unpaid road toll of $6.49. Pay today to avoid a $50 late fee and registration suspension: [link]”

Why this is suspicious

Scammers impersonate state toll programs and use a small balance plus a large threatened penalty to create urgency. The linked page may collect card and driver's license information.

Warning signs

  • The text arrived unexpectedly
  • It threatens an immediate penalty
  • It includes a payment link
  • The site name only resembles the real toll agency

What to do next

  1. Do not click or reply
  2. Find your state's toll agency website independently
  3. Check your account or call a verified agency number
  4. Report the text as junk and forward it to 7726
